Great Music At The Spencer Penn Centre

leave a comment »

Wayne Henderson, Helen White and Jeff Little performed on Monday night at the Spencer Penn Centre after a daylong Harvest Foundation sponsored event. I’ll talk more about the event later.

Henderson is a National Heritage Award recipient honored for his craftsmanship as a luthier and his renowned finger-style Appalachian guitar playing. Henderson has toured in the U.S., Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

White is the founder and regional coordinator of the Junior Appalachian Musicians program which introduces Appalachian children to their musical heritage. An award-winning singer, multi-instrumentalist and composer in her own right, Helen has toured extensively with Wayne in the U.S. and Europe.

Little’s involvement with fiddle tunes, old time country and rockabilly dates to his growing up in Boone, N.C. He has been playing professionally since the age of fourteen. Monday night he was “piano picking”. Jeff has taken his traditional roots to tour around the world including performances in Sri Lanka, Oman, France, Tanzania and The Smithsonian Institution.

I was at the Spencer Penn Centre from 9:30 a.m. until about 7:15 tonight. I only was able to listen to a few songs by the group, but they were outstanding. I wish I could have stayed, but I had to get some of these photos to the client. I hope I get to see then again sometime. Little is the piano player, Helen White was playing the guitar and fiddle and Henderson was playing a guitar. The photos were shot with an Olympus E-3 and Nikon D700.
